Local Government Attorney

The Starkey Law Group is seeking a dedicated Local Government Attorney to join our team in local government law to manage transactional matters. As our Local Government Attorney, you'll manage transactional legal matters that impact the various departments and officials that serve our local government clients. You will provide advice and counsel and be available to answer questions during normal operating hours and sometimes beyond normal operating hours. Such advice and counsel will be provided to department heads, local government employees, and local government officials. You will make on-site visits and field investigations to resolve pending legal matters. You will also attend Mayor & Council meetings and other local government meetings as assigned by the City Attorney. A minor aspect of your job function includes staffing administrative hearings as counsel for the appointed hearing officer and/or counsel for the disciplinary authority.


Responsibilities:


  • Manage transactional matters from inception through resolution ensuring our clients receive the proper advice and counsel.
  • Review, approve, and draft important documents key to local government operations. Such documents include, but are not limited to, legislation, resolutions, ordinances, ordinance amendments, contracts, legal opinions, memorandums, intergovernmental agreements, charters, and charter amendments.
  • Represent clients in court proceedings, mediation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution forums.
  • Conduct legal research using tools such as Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw.
  • Provide strategic legal advice and guidance to clients.
  • Ensure high-quality service delivery and client satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys to develop strategies.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in laws and regulations related to our firm’s practice areas.
  • Communicate with clients, witnesses, and other involved parties to gather information.
  • Manage support staff on the local government team.
  • Learn and apply our firm's filing and standard operating procedure systems. 
  • Work collaboratively with support staff to maintain the firm’s filing and standard operating procedure systems. 


Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • At least 7 years of local government experience.
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Georgia, and in good standing.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law.
  • Local government document review and drafting experience.
  • Experience in litigation and courtroom procedures.
  • Proficiency in conducting legal research using Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage support staff.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
